The outstanding contribution to their communities by volunteers across South Lanarkshire has been recognised.

Provost Bert Thomson presented more than 35 recipients with a trophy and certificate at two special ceremonies at South Lanarkshire Council’s HQ in Hamilton.

Nominations were made by councillors and included people whose volunteering included everything from local community groups, churches and events, community councils, family support and youth programmes, sport and recreation, fund raising and gardening and environmental work.

There is no restriction on nominations, other than the person must have made a significant contribution to community life.

Provost Bert Thomson said: “As always, we have received an incredible number of nominations – highlighting the fantastic work going on across South Lanarkshire.

“Much of this work so often goes unnoticed and unrecognised.

“None of you really care about that – helping others is your priority – not receiving thanks for doing something you love.

“But this awards ceremony acknowledges and highlights all that you have done and will continue to do regardless of any awards.

“We want to let you know how much your work really is appreciated by the groups, individuals or organisations in your communities that you dedicate so much of your own time making their lives that bit better.

“For me personally, I find it a real honour, and a humbling one, to celebrate your achievements.

“It really is appreciated so much by so many people in the communities where your volunteering is absolutely invaluable.

“So, on behalf of everyone across South Lanarkshire, a huge thanks to you all for your invaluable work – your work would be greatly missed by those most in need of your support and dedication.”
